Professor & head of the MIND
Enza Messina

Enza Messina is a Full Professor of Operations Research at the Department of Computer Science, Systems, and Communication, where she is the head of the MIND Laboratory and the Coordinator of the Master’s Degree Program in Computer Science.

Her research activities primarily focus on studying methods and models for decision-making under uncertainty. She integrates prescriptive models based on mathematical programming with machine learning methods based on probabilistic models.

Elisabetta Fersini

Elisabetta Fersini is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science, Systems, and Communication.

Her research focuses primarily on machine learning and natural language processing, with specific interests in hate speech detection, information extraction and topic modelling.

Iman Seyedi

Iman Seyedi is a postdoctoral researcher. He specialized in supply chain optimization, operations research, and Machine Learning, and has 15 years of experience solving logistics challenges. His expertise includes developing hybrid algorithms and designing sustainable supply chain networks. Currently, he focuses on optimizing Closed-Loop Supply Chains using advanced machine-learning techniques to drive impactful solutions.

Postdoc Researcher
Antonio Consolo

Antonio Consolo is a postdoctoral researcher in Operations Research and Machine Learning.
He received the M.S. degree in Mathematical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 2019.
He obtained his Ph.D. in Information Technology at the Department of Electronics, Information
and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano in 2024 with a thesis titled “Sparse soft decision
trees and kernel logistic regression: optimization models and algorithms”. His research interests
mainly concern the design of nonlinear optimization algorithms and models for the training of
interpretable machine learning models.

Giulia Rizzi

Giulia Rizzi is a postdoc research.
She obtained a Ph.D. in a double PhD in Computer Science at Università degli Studi di Milano – Bicocca (UniMiB) and at Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).
Her research interests are centered in the field of Natural Language Processing and machine learning. She is currently working on a project that focuses on misogyny detection in memes under the Learning With Disagreements paradigm.

Gianmaria Balducci

Gianmaria Balducci is a 3rd year PhD student in an industrial position at PMI Reboot.
His research activities primarily focus on Named Entity Recognition and Relation Extraction. 
Other research activities are focused on bias in NLP algorithms.

Michele Carbonera

Michele Carbonera is a 3rd year PhD student specializing in generative models (GenAI). His research focuses on the generation of multivariate scenarios, with a particular emphasis on traffic scenario generation to enhance transport optimization problems.

Fariha Maqbool

Fariha Maqbool ia a 3rd year PhD student at the University of Milano Bicocca. Her research is mainly focused on Multimodal AI, with a particular emphasis on the fusion of natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision techniques. She is also interested in addressing the challenges posed by data scarcity in low resource languages in the domain of NLP.  Her research has applications in hateful content detection on social media platforms.

Marco Piazza is a 2nd year phd student working on Game Theory-based methods for Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI).
His research interests include Machine Learning and Deep Learning for classification and XAI, with a focus on improving the robustness, stability, and generalizability of Game Theory approaches for XAI.

Daniel Scalena is a 2nd year PhD student in a cotutelle agreement with University of Groningen.
His research focuses mainly on the interpretability of language models, in particular towards their safe and reliable deployment in real-world contexts.

Giuseppe Magazzù

Giuseppe Magazzù is a 1st year PhD student. His research focuses on developing an ethical framework and implementing safety strategies to ensure that large language models generate safe, useful, and high-quality outputs. In particular, he is working on designing guardrail methods and benchmarks tailored to the Italian language.
